Chinese Ink Wash Workshop
Since his early childhood, Jhycheng Wu has learned Chinese calligraphy. Fascinated by all the traditional painting masters of his time, he quickly developed a passion for it and deepened his knowledge throughout his schooling. By learning the different styles of this painting technique, the artist built his own. Today, he is constantly inspired by his surroundings and continues to practice this technique. Its ease of use, harmony, and the magic of this art allow “each composition or stroke to give a completely different image of the work.”
Chinese Ink Wash is similar to calligraphy; it always follows a meaning: “from top to bottom and left to right.” It is a traditional Asian technique that Jhycheng Wu has been teaching since 1998 in order to transmit the beauty of this art.
You will follow a traditional Chinese Ink Wash learning process during these courses, starting with learning how to hold a brush (“tip, belly, and head”), dosing water and ink on the brush, and the correct wrist movement, eventually creating beautiful flowers and birds!
“The work of Jhycheng Wu is rooted in the veins of Chinese watercolor (the so-called ‘Chinese ink’): and it is known that painting and philosophy are infinitely linked there, that philosophy there first consists of an aesthetic practice of existence. But this Chinese tradition is just one of the two sources of Wu’s work, deeply marked by the history and techniques of European oil painting.” – Stéphane Pawloff
Different themes are addressed in each workshop (e.g., Sieyi style – flowers and birds).

“Mountains and waters, flowers and birds… Play of ink and water, the silence of the brush on rice paper, deep black, gradients of gray, faded spots, vivid and flexible strokes, light or heavy, dry, chopped, frayed… Then a landscape appears, framing the emptiness of the page…”
